Environmental problems are a very difficult subject.
In my opinion environmental problems are caused by the humans.
From the humans caused environmental problems can originate from the use of natural resources, the settlement of new areas as well as a by-product of the use of technologies.
So I can't choose one of the photographs and explain the possible causes that this natural disaster may have.
But I can mention a few examples of environmental problems and disasters:
1. The global warming, the greenhouse effect, the water pollution, the ground pollution, the air pollution, the smog, the acid rain and the ozone hole.
2. The resource curse, the water shortage, the soil erosion, and the world hunger caused by the environment.
3. The noise and the refuse.
4. The biodiversity loss, the species extinction and the drastic deforestation.
What a depletion of our nature or our living space, just because of hunger and before of all money.

If it is specific  you use ' the' .  If it is a general  term  you don't.

Dogs  are ugly.  ( general)   The dog over there is  beautiful  and he's mine! ( specific)
