Since I have children, my New Year's Eves have been mostly consisting of family diners. But when I was younger, I really liked to go to parties with friends. Usually, we had a big "home made" diner together and after the diner, we went dancing.

Diner is a word = someone that dines

But in this case, it should be dinner.

Only a spelling error.

A double consonant after a vowel makes the vowel sound short... so "dinner" has a short i sound.

A single consonant after a vowel makes the vowel sound long.... so "diner" has a long i sound (and is the word for someone who is doing the eating!)

It's the same with supper and super.  One p in super makes it a super word!  Two p's in supper make it a meal.
