Hello Alexandra!
Welcome to our group if I haven't greeted you earlier! :)
My name is Alexandra. Are you a teacher? I think we use 'I' before a verb and we use 'I am' before a noun. Is this correct?
Do you mean in this form Alexandra? :
I jump. I am jumping. I dance. I am dancing. I sing. I am singing. I write. I am writing.
If so, these are what we call the '-ing' words.
The words with 'I' in front are the verbs and they tell what the action is.
We see: jump ; dance ; sing ; write - these are the verbs.
Underneath: jumping ; dancing ; singing ; writing
'I am' now is the is the verb 'I am' and the '-ing' word is a verb being used as a noun or an adjective.
Therefore, if I understand you correctly - you are right.
Let me know if I have misunderstood you so that I can put it right for you.
June :)
Of course, sorry for mistake, dancing, writing - it is noun, right? We use "I am" verb+ ing=noun
Hello Alexandra! :)
Please do not apologise for any mistakes. I admire anyone who tries to learn our language.
You are right, you understand a difficult part of our grammar.
These are called 'gerunds' and 'past participles' but they are so close and many people have difficulty in seeing the difference.
I tell people not to give themselves a headache trying to work out which is which, just grasp the principle of '-ing words' !
June :).
Thank you a lot!!
