What do you think is the best, a cat or a dog?

I like cats and dogs, but I think it's more convenient to have a cat because I don't have to go outside three times a day. When the weather is bad, I can stay at home with a cat. If you have a cat, it's not necessary to have a garden, I can have a cat in my flat. However, I think a dog gives more affection than a cat that is often independent. I love all these animals  that make life for us much  better.

I agree with you Andrèe, cats are more convenient pets if you cannot   have the space to keep and exercise a dog. It is said that you don't own a cat - a cat owns you! They can be very independent  creatures; but I think that both   cats and dogs give their owners a lot of affection.

Welcome to our group. :)

First of all, I am not a dog-eating Korean guy. Definitely I love dogs; cats also.

It's  a similar question to "Whom do you love more, your mother or your father?'

As our  closest friend, dogs have a loyalty to human beings, but on the other hand, can be bothersome.

Cats are quiter than dogs, but I feel they are  selfish sometimes. I'll give  my score to loyalty. Dogs win!

We have had both as pets in the past  Aramo. and cats are more independen; if you upset a cat by  shouting at it they take offence and sulk for days; but a dog is so forgiving.  They always  come to you with a wagging tail as soon as they know they are forgiven. It is nearly a year since we had to have our dog Sammy put to sleep, and we still miss him and  weep when we think back to that last morning of his life.

I would*  say that a dog is always best because a dog is clever, faithful and always remains alert.

No thief can easily snatch away anything from a house where a dog is present.. In fact, I love dogs very much.  In our country (India), dogs are considered  as domestic lions or village lions. There is a saying here in India about dogs that ghosts and evil spirits are afraid of dogs.  I accept that cats are cute, but still I vote for dogs.

* 'should' is used in when expressing something obligatory: 

You should always look both ways before crossing the road.

'would' is used  in a less strong more polite way 'I would like to come to your party.'

It is also used to express an inclination, a desire or an opinion.

Everything you say about dogs is correct, Ramana and that is an excellent description 'dometic  lions.' They really would fight to the death to protect their owner(s).

They are also said to be  very sensitive to the presence of spirits. We used to go to a club which was haunted (I can vouch for that! :))

The owners had a big strong labrador, a dog named Toby who went all round the premises with his master before he locked up for the night...but although the dog would go down in the cellar with his master, he would not go into  a certain corner of the room.

We were taken down to see this - and his master could click his fingers,  give a sharp order or hold out a treat, the  dog would come so close but not in the corner. He would stand there with his tail down and his head turned away.

Definitely, I like dogs. I have two, one of them is a German shepherd and the other is a Schnauzer. Both are female dogs (bitches) and they are so cute and loyal.

When I am lonely they are with me all the time.

It is amazing how they sense when you are not feeling well or if you feel sad - and they are such a comfort. We had to have our dog Sammy put to sleep last year before his time, he became very ill and was found to have an inoperable tumour which was affecting his breathing.

Our hearts still ache  and we can both weep when we think of that last morning  he had on earth.

I also prefer dogs to cats, because dogs are faithful and also I've got two dogs and two puppies in my home. I love them very much.

Diamonds are forever = dogs are forever. My dogs are my diamonds.

We stayed with someone for a few days who had seven dogs. They were beautiful dogs, always happy together, running and playing, their tails were always wagging.

We had to have our dog put to sleep last year and we are still upset  and miss him so much. Those seven dogs seemed to sense  our  sadnes, they made such a fuss of us. and they really eased our sense of loss.
