Hi everybody,

I'm new in busuu and entered your group yesterday. I want to introduce myself: I'm a 26 years old girl from germany and finished my studies in economics a few months ago. I've learned english since the fifth year in school but in the last years I haven't a lot of possibilities to use it. Now I try to refresh my english skills and recognized, that I have forgotten grammatical regulations and a lot of my vocabulary. I hope to learn in busuu the use of the grammatic again and few new words :-)

The last days I saw, that it's not enough to do the english courses, because I don't get the practice in english if I only answer the questions. At the moment I don't have the heart to speak in the Busuutalk and hope, that I can practice my english in this group.

June, I wish you all the best for your computer and hope you can enjoy your holidays. We don't have holidays next week. The last week was very sunny and hot, but today it's grey and cold again :-(

Hello Erna!

A warm welcome to our group.  :)

I'm new in busuu and joined your group yesterday.

I want to introduce myself. I'm a 26 years old girl from Germany and finished my studies in economics a few months ago. I've learned English since my fifth year in school, but during  the last few years I haven't had a lot of opportunity to use it. Now I have tried to refresh my English skills and  recognised that  I have forgotten the rules of grammar and a lot of my vocabulary. I hope to learn in Busuu the use of grammar again and a few new words :-)

Over  the last few days I saw that it's not enough to do the English courses, because I don't get practice  in English if I only answer the questions. At the moment I don't have the heart (confidence?) to speak in the Busuu Talk and I hope I can practise my English in this group.

June, I wish you all the best with your computer and hope that you enjoy your holidays. We do not have a holiday next week. Last week was very sunny and hot, but today it is cold and grey again. :-(

Well,  Erna, the good news is that  you have done very well, there are only some minor corrections.

The main correction is to always give countries a capital letter.

The other good news is that  you just get 'rusty' if you have learned a language and  haven't used it for a long time.

This means that it does not take you long to remember what you think you have forgotten! :)

My husband, after many, many years since he learned French at school, was asked  to learn French so that  the firm could cope with orders from France.

He thought he had forgotten everything, but he told me that after about six weeks, it all came back to him and he did have a big advantage over those who were new to French.

You are right about  not getting practice if you just answer the  exercise questions.

There are many topics here for you to write about and I will correct them.

There are also some pages of grammar that I have compiled.

Also, I think that if you can be creative in answering the exercise questions so that you have to write more than you are asked is good; because you get many people are  more motivated to correct a long interesting piece rather than a short answer to the question.

Good luck Erna!

June :)

Hi June, thank you very much for your detailed correction. You are doing a really great job here. I'll read you grammar pages as soon as possible. I think you're right, creative answers in the exercises are more interesting to other peoples correcting it.

I'm recognizing, that I remember a lot if I use English more often. I try to read here, do the exercises and try to watch films or series in tv in English. (But I dont' understand all films on the same level. I think it's in the different dialects or in American/British English :-) )  And also I listen to an english audiobook (Harry Potter :-D ) but I'm knowing this story so well, why it's not hard to understand it :-)

I hope your PC-Problem is repaired. I wish you all the best,

Erna.

Thank you Ema!

You are very welcome. :)

Here are a couple of corrections to help you further:

'...... creative  answers in the exercises  are more interesting to the people* correcting them.

When you use plural nouns in a sentences  everything else has to agree:

answers, exercises,  people you need to use 'are' and  'them.'

If  the nouns had been singular:

answer,  exercise, person* use 'a'  'is' and 'it' :

a creative answer in the exercise is more interesting to the person correcting it.

* Note:  person is the singular of  the plural 'people';

one person = person (singular)  more than one persone = people  (plural)

You are doing all the right things by reading and listening to English.

American English is  different from  British English.

It depends which English you want to speak /  write.

I   speak British English, but I always stress that I can only correct in British English, but American English is correct in its own country.

I have done all I can for  my computer - I  think it is  alright now....I only think!  :)

June :)

I am afraid there is no easy answer, Zhangxj!

You have to study hard.

Keep practise writing in English so that you can learn from your corrections - this is why I provide the topics for you, so have a go at a few, and together with your busuu lessons you will find  you will make some progress.

Also read English newspapers and watch the news on tv. I think there is a programme where you can see the news read slowly with a translation underneath.

I will see if I can find it for you.

Let me correct your message for a little extra help. :-)

Thanks for your reply. I am glad to meet you too. I am a sales manager in our company, so I used to  keep in touch with our English customers. I studied English in the  school from  13 years old, but now I am not good in using English because I had little chance to practise reading or speaking English. How can I improve it quickly? I am continually looking for a way. I hope I can receive  help  from the busuu *community.

* A word of caution here Zhangxj!

The only way you will learn is from native speakers of English in the busuu  community. Do not take any notice of 'fluent' speakers because although well intentioned, many are not competent to  teach English language, correct it  or to speak it. You will only be picking up their mistakes.

Make sure you have plenty of native English speakers so that you can ask them to correct your work -and also have a chat on 'busuu tallk.'

Good luck - and keep in touch!

June :)
