EVERYBODY PLEASE READ THIS
I have been asked by some members to correct homework, essays or assignments before they have handed them in to their teacher, tutor or lecturer.
.I cannot do any kind of work outside of Busuu..
I am not employed by Busuu. I do not get paid by Busuu.
Busuu does not even give me any thanks or praise for my time or my work within this group..
I run it just to help people who are learning English.
It is cheating and unethical to ask for this kind of help
These people would be getting a mark for work that I had corrected which would be undeserved.
It would be unfair to their fellow students who have also handed their work in, in the good faith that they had done their best and would get a good and a fair mark based on what they had done...
Remember it is not just your English, it is the content of your work that you get marks for..
What if I saw that you had made a big mistake in your work that is not grammar? Do I correct that as well? Of course not! You have to take responsibility for everything in your own work.
This also applies to letters of application for jobs. Employers are not deceived by an application written in perfect English if it is not your own work!
I do not wish to be seen as harsh, but I will delete these requests. I cannot give this kind of help.
I hope everybody will see my point and the position that these requests have placed me in and respect what I am saying.
I agree with you. It happened to me when I just began busuu : a girl sent me an exercice by mail and asked me to correct it quickly !!! I understood, I wrote to the girl, but of course she never replyed me. It's important to respect teatchers'work.
You are right !
Thank you for your comment!
Many people think they can just ask for help and for it to be done quickly! Very often you find that they do not even bother to reply and acknowledge your work.
I have only ever done this once when I first came to busuu; a man wanted me to correct an introduction to a travel guide he had compiled. It had to be in perfect English, so I corrected the introduction. It was not bad English, but not good enough to introduce his guide!
I never had one word of appreciation for my time or goodwill in helping him!
I decided that I would not do that again!
However, to be asked to correct something that is going to handed in as their own work for an exam is morally wrong. Yet people still send me long 'essays' that are part of an exam for me to correct before they hand it in to their tutor! I find this unbelievable.
It is nice to see that people are reading these comments and find them interesting long after they have been made.
Thank you again Catherine!
Thanks to you, Dear June !
Anger: Busuu.com violating their own terms, not taking measures regarding cases of fraud and offending customers
Good evening, dear June, good evening, Busuu.com group,
I hope you are fine.
Well, the topic here is actually fraud and harassment, and, in my case, there's a kind of growing, dwelling anger at this moment - anger regarding Busuu.com.
One might ask "why?".
That's easy to answer, here we go:
Before I go into detail, I would like to point out that I am no English native speaker, so I do apologize if there are bigger mistakes be it regarding language itself or the rules of courtesy.
Although Busuu.com promotes its "premium services" (at least in the German-speaking environment), which are actually no real premium services, but rather the actual services (for without being "premium", one is not really able to make use of the page and to really learn a language) as "ad-free", I'm facing all the time an ad at the very top of the Busuu pages all the day. It promotes the "Iphone" cellular phone. So, being a paying "premium" customer, I'm asking myself, how can it be that I am confronted all the time with this annoying ad?!
Do you also have this problem?
If so, I would suggest to "mass-write" the Busuu.com customer service, for we're the ones who pay their monthly wages, and without us visiting their page (what alone generates enough money via promotion) and paying for the so-called "premium" status, they will have to think twice whether to behave this way or not.
The next issue is the following:
In the German-language "Iphone" ad and, in general, in the mail correspondence with their customers, Busuu.com insults their German-speaking customers using very informal language, only allowed for friends and family ("Du" instead of "Sie"), which is actually impolite or even antisocial.
Do you share similar experiences?
Then, I detect more and more errors, especially in their German-languge exercises and explanations, but also in some other languages, however, whenever I report it to Busuu.com's so-called "customer service", there tends to be no reply. Well, as we would say in German, "no reply is also a (kind of) reply".
How are your experiences regarding mistakes, errors and the feedback by Busuu.com when reporting them?
The next thing is that recently there are more and more so-called scam mails and cases of attempted fraud: Women, either without picture or with profile picture reminding the oldest profession in the world, in unambiguous poses and clothing, write long, long begging messages in bad, primitive English, begging for money (oh, no, sorry – they often “love” you (virtually and not knowing you) and want to “marry” you ;) ) . In many cases, it is clearly sexual harassment! Of course, these messages are so clearly to be detected as fraud, and so stupid and primitive, that anyone having common sense actually rather has to laugh and then immediately deletes the message, but, of course, it is a waste of time and there's more and more messages of this kind.
Now, not to be misunderstood, it's clear that this might happen on any internet platform (from time to time). There are everywhere evil-minded, bad, primitive, harassing people around. So, in general, it's obviously not Busuu.com who is to blame for that. But: Busuu.com, in my humble opinion, seems not to really care about this issue, not taking measures against it, and I do not see they would try to change it and to make it more difficult to such criminals to molest the Busuu.com community! I rather see that even when many Busuu.com members mark the entries of such criminals as "negative" and contact Busuu.com, they do often not delete these criminal and molesting users' profiles! How can that be?
Do you have similar experiences, and if so, how do you think about it?
So, to sum it up, although in general, Busuu.com is a good idea and has its advantages, and I wouldn't really like to leave this community, recently I am experiencing more and more annoying things that make me think about both cancelling my membership and reporting about Busuu.com's proceeding on my blogs and pages, especially because they usually do not even answer to many complaints and questions or at least, if they do so, not really deal with the issues in their “answers”.
Nevertheless, I wish you all a pleasant evening (or whatever, depending on where you are located)!
I'm sorry, June, sorry, group: I actually wanted to post this message in another topic of this group, here:
"MPORTANT! FOR YOUR SAFETY. READ THIS OR GET IT TRANSLATED"
A warm welcome to our group. :)
I have just read your message and I have nodded in agreement to everything that you say. You are correct in everything that you say.
When I first started this group, I had many messages from very upset young women (some were little more than schoolgirls) to complain about being asked to help someone with learning their native language by webcam and then being sent some very offensive and sexually explicit images of the male person who had asked for help! Most of these messages included a profile pic of very handsome and well endowed men!
I sent many messages to busuu reporting this disgusting activity against women and young girls who are being targeted by these perverts.
Along with these kind of complaints, we had the scammers that you referred to and also the 'business opportunites.' There is among the top fifty groups a group that is promoting what looks like a pyramid scheme which is illegal in many countries.
Again, I wrote to busuu to ask why they allow these people to use their website to promote their scams and businesses with the sole aim of getting money from their students. However, as with everything else I did not have any constructive reply except to thank me for pointing these matters out and inviting me to upgrade to their premium lessons where there were special offers!
Eventually I started another group against these perverts and scammers where anyone could alert the group to any new scam and any indecent activity that had been experienced. It was also to reassure young women that they were not on there own and could receive support and alerts.
There many other busuu students who have also complained to busuu about the same things that you have very quickly observed; so busuu are aware of what is going on within their site! I am only surprised that some of the young girls' parents have not also complained to busuu about this disgraceful state of affairs.
I am so glad that you read my message of warning to everybody. In the early days when there was a lot of messaging between myself and other group members, many members did read and add comments, interest, but recently many new members have joined - and many do not even bother to reply when I give them the help that they ask for.
In answering you here, Aschmoret, I cannot see your original message, so I hope I have covered everything. You have done so well to make your feelings known. I could understand everything that you wrote.
I am sure that I have made many 'typos' here as it is now 3.24am - so I must go to bed.
Thank you very much for your contribution. It will also be helpful to those other students who will read it and put them on their guard if they have not yet had the pleasure of receiving some of these scams and sad messages begging for money in terrible English!
They do not think anyone will wonder how they have got a computer to send out these sad requests! :) This includes those who have dreadful 'illnesses' and are 'dying' - but they have the strength to use their computer to send messages to ask for money so that they can go to hospital to save their life!
I am sure that I have made many 'typos' here as it is 3.35am and I must go to bed !
Good night (or 'good morning! :))
