Maths from mathematics is the British version. (According to dictionary is slang - reference given below).

Math is as you say a noun as is maths.

They are both used in the singular and plural (even though there is an 's' on both versions).

Math from mathematics is the American version. (But according to the dictionary I use it is slang and therefore not correct English).  Reference:- Oxford English Dictionary, 1990 version, page 732.

To Oye 22   I am also a native speaker of English, and a retired teacher of English and European studies.

On reading your explanation you sound more American than British but that may be just because you have lived there a long time and have acquired the American way of expressing yourself.
