Ok, I would say something like: Hello, may I speak to Sara?. If she is available and she answers, I would say: Hello, how are you. If you she is busy, I would say: Ok, I can call her later :). If the person who answers the phone asks me to wait, I would just say: Ok, I hold on.

Ok, I would say something like this: Hello, may I speak to Sara?. If she were available to speak, I would say: Hello, how are you?. If she were busy, I would say: Ok, I can call her later :). If the person who answers the phone asked me to wait, I would just say: Ok, I hold on.

 

This structure is called second conditional form. So, you have to use a simple past + would. ex

If she WERE busy, I WOULD say

Were = simple past of the verb to be   + Would
