South Africa in shock over Pistorius murder case

http://www.euronews.com/ South Africa has been stunned by the arrest and prosecution for murder of the country's star Olympian, Oscar Pistorius. The athlete has appeared in court, accused of shooting dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Front page coverage in the newspapers buried President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation address to the inside pages. "Deadly Valentine", "Blade Gunner?" and "Golden Boy Loses Shine" were among many inventive headlines. Pistorius is a hero in the country for his triumph over adversity in competing at the highest level in sport. No-one knows the facts of the case for sure, but plenty, in shock, are voicing their opinions. "He is not capable to do such a thing. If he did, I don't know what might be, but I'm so sad, really, because he is my inspiration. I'm extremely disappointed the way things happened," said Zweli Thusi in Johannesburg. "I was born and raised in Johannesburg, which is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world and I can say for sure: you would know if it was a burglar, at 4 o'clock in the morning in a high security estate, there is no chance it was a burglar. So, that whole story doesn't fly with me," said another Johannesburg resident, John Bentel. "A good guy"; he was "kind to everyone"... such comments are typical of dismayed callers to radio talk shows. Pistorius, a double amputee, competed with able-bodied athletes at the London Olympics last year while also winning two gold medals in the Paralympics. His fame brought in sponsorship deals reckoned to be worth as much as three million euros. Sportswear giant Nike said they would not make any decisions until the police investigation is completed. The national hero of South Africa, the double amputee winner of Paralympic Games Oscar Pistorius shot his girlfriend at 4 o'clock in the morning of Valentine Day in his house. Nobody knows the facts of this sad story but everybody is stunned by this murder. They say his girlfriend wanted to make a surprise for Pistorius and secretly entered a dwelling early in the morning. Perhaps Pistorius took her for a burglar and used his rights to keep and bear Arms and for self-defense. Whatever, it is a very upsetting accident.

Nobody knows the facts of this sad story (for sure) but everybody is stunned by this murder (killing?..  if nobody knows the facts, surely it can't be murder until after the trial). They say his girlfriend wanted to make a surprise for Pistorius and secretly entered a the dwelling early in the morning. Perhaps Pistorius mistook her for a burglar and, using his rights to keep and bear arms, and for shot her in self-defense. Whatever really happened, it is a very upsetting accident (incident?  we do not know if it was an accident).

Really great English. A+

I am not sure whether this is about your English..

"Nobody knows the facts of this sad story but everybody is stunned by this murder"

It can't be described as "murder" if "nobody knows the facts".

John, I think you of all people know that busuu is not only for studying languages.

I used this phrase first time: "You of all people know that...". Has it the same meaning as: "You know like nobody else that..." Is it right John?

I am sorry my friend but I don't understand what you are sayin.

Perhaps you might not understand me as well.

I simply tried to say that if we don't know the details then we don't know it was murder.

l am sorry too, my friend but you might also misunderstood me. I only meant, that we can talk not only about my English but about whether it was the murder or not, for example.

Well. She was shot. How else can you call it? I just wonder.

Nothing will be gained by further discussion so we can both be comfortable with our definitions of murder.

When a court decides it was a murder, I will refer to it as a murder.

Before a court makes a finding, you call it murder; based only (correct me if I am wrong) on what you have read in newspapers and seen on television.

Happily, I have always lived in societies where the burden of proof is on the prosecution to convince a criminal jury that an accused is guilty beyond reasonable doubt.   Media outlets who describe this kind of death as murder prejudice the case and land themselves in big trouble.   I like this system.

The girl was shot four times and died of gunshot wounds. Ok. Lets call it "dead girl with some bullets in her body".
"The beheaded bodies of a Ukrainian judge and three members of his family have been found in their apartment." Yes. We don't call it a murder here. We call it "an incident" before a court...

I like your system too!
