When I am on the holidays I prefer to buy food in the supermarkets, because it is cheaper. I buy souvenirs from local sealers.

When I am on vacation I prefer to buy food in the supermarkets, because it is cheaper. I buy souvenirs from local merchants.

In the US we say "on vacation" rather than "on holiday".
