L'imparfait

The structure of this tense requires that you know how to conjugate the verb in present simple. This tense expresses an action in the past without an specific ending. This is the difference between l'imparfait and passé composé (=where the activity has a specific end. The activity was fully finished).

All you have to do it to take the root of the verb conjugated in 3º person plural in the present tense and add:

je   -ais

tu   -ais

il/elle  -ait

nous   -ions

vous    -iez

ils/elles   -aient

examples: Manger ---> 3º person plural in simple present: mangeons --->

l'imparfait: je mangeais, tu mangeais, il mangeait, nous mangeions, vous mangeiez, ils mangeaient

Try to do it: avoir, savoir, voir, regarder, éspérer, courir, coudre, répondre, compendre, rendre, prendre, dormir...

Note: There is 1 exception: Être (root: ét-)

j'étais - tu étais - il/elle était - nous étions - vous étiez - ils/elles étaient

Une petite remarque on n'écrit pas à l'imparfait : je mangais ...........,mais je mangeais,tu mangeais ,il mngeait........,
