I usully choose my book according to the review on the back cover , If I like it I will buy the book , also I usully check the best selling books in Newyork best selling books , and www.Amazon.com ,even when I believe that not all best selling books are good, but at least it's keep me updated with new books .
I often borrow books from the local library and I also choose them according to the review/summary on the back cover. Sometimes I see a movie and then I'm interested in reading the novel that inspired that movie. Friends' suggestions are also useful when choosing a book.
I never choose a book after seeing the movie based on it because the movie takes my personal image; so I prefer much more to read and imagine and fantasize rather than to read thinking of the movie scenes.
There is a site that reccommends books on the basis of those that you have read so far and that you have liked. I use it quite often, but it's in Polish and I don't know if there's something similar in other languages. I also tend to read books when they have an interesting title or cover, or when my friends with similar taste suggest reading something.

Usually these are advice of my relatives (we have much in common with my mum concerning reading) and friends, or just I found some describition on the internet and want to read it.. if everyone likes a certain book, why i don't like it.. also my favoutite authors - if i liked smth i can read smth else by this writer.
I like attend different bookmarkets and bookshops - big or little. There is special atmosphere, much classic and new books, favorite and unknown authors. Ilike it very much!
