Nominative

1. When we are talking about the subject of the action

2. When we are talking about belongings

 I have a house (house will be in nominative case in Russian)

1. Я люблю тебя – I love you

   Девочка любит пиццу – a girl likes pizza

2. У меня есть друг – I have a friend

У друга есть жена – My friend has a wife

Genitive

1. When we are talking about absence

I don’t have a house (house is the genitive case)

2. When we are talking about subject of belonging

I have a house (“I” should be the G.C.)

3. Possesive nouns

(The sister’s house – sister is the GC).

4. When we can ask «where from (откуда)»

I am from Germany (Germany is in the GC)

5. Always after prepositions:

Для (for), без (without), до (till, until, before), у (near), около (near), после (after), из (from), от (from)

У меня нет дома – I don’t have a house

У меня нет машины – I don’t have a car

У сестры есть дом – My sister has a house

У брата есть машина – My brother has a car

Это дом сестры – This is my sister’s house

Это дом брата – this is my brother’s house

Это центр Москвы – this is a center of Moscow

Я из Германии – I’m from Germany

Я из Берлина – I’m from Berlin

Это для сестры – this is for the sister

Магазин около офиса – the store is close to the office

Dative

When we are talking about addressee

When we are talking about age

With adverbs with show the condition

If we are talking about the direction, we can ask “where to?” (about people0 (I’m going to the doctor – “doctor” should be in the DC)

For the person who we talk to

I told my friend (my friend is DC)

Я дал сестре книгу – I gave a book to my sister

Я пишу письмо брату – I’m writing a letter to my brother

Сестре 20 лет – my sister is 20

Сестре холодно – my sister is cold

Я иду к директору – I’m going to the director

Я говорил брату – I said to my brother

Accusative

When we are talking about the direct object (“I like pizza”, pizza is a direct object, it should be in the AC)

When we can ask “where to”

With the days of week if we can ask “when”

Я вижу дом – I see a house

Я вижу директора – I see the director

Я люблю пиццу – I love a pizza

Я иду в банк – I’m going to a bank

Я иду в аптеку – I’m going to a pharmacy

В понедельник – on Monday

В среду – on Wednesday

Instrumental

1. When we are talking about an instrument

2. Always with the preposition “with = с”

3. With prepositions:

  над (above), под (under), за (behind), перед (in front of), между (between)

1. Я ем десерт ложкой – I eat my dessert with a spoon

2. Я с братом – I’m with my brother

За домом – behind a house

Перед машиной – in front of a car

Между машиной и домом – between a car and a house

Prepositional

When we can ask “when”

I am in Moscow (Moscow should be in the prepositional case)

With preposition “about = о”

Я в Германии – I’m in Germany

Я в Берлине – I’m in Berlin

Я думаю о брате – I’m thinking about my brother

Я думаю о сестре – I’m thinking about my sister
