I have been noticing whenever I get requests to correct Busuu posts that many people have trouble with clauses. A clause is a group of related words containing a subject and a verb. There are two main types of clauses: independent and dependent. An independent clause can stand on its own as a sentence. For example: The dog ran. A dependent clause is the opposite and can not stand on its own as a sentence. For example: Because she ate.
When you create a sentence you can use an independent clause, indepedent and independent clause, or dependent and independent clause. There are certain rules you must follow to use these properly though. For instance, when using an indepedent clause you can just write it out normally. For example: The dog ate. However, when using an independent and independent clause one needs to link them together somehow. For example the sentence "The dog ate the dog ran" is not correct. There are two independent clauses and we must either put a comma followed by a conjunction to separate the two clauses, make them two separate sentences, or use a semi colon. When using a comma followed by a conjunction the new sentence would be, "The dog ate, and the dog ran." When making the clauses two separate sentences it would be, "The dog ate. The dog ran." When using a semi colon it would be, "The dog ate; the dog ran." Now, when using a dependent and independent clause one uses a comma to separate the two clauses. For instance, "Because the dog ate he had energy to run" is not correct. You would need to separate it with the comma, and it would be "Because the dog ate, he had energy to run."
-I hope this helps you guys. :) If you have questions or need more help, feel free to ask me.
