___________________About letter Ь and Ъ_____________________
Before the revolution of 1917 in Russia one of two signs had written after all consonants in the end of a closed syllable.
And if a consonant must be hard, there was used the letter -Ъ (tvyordij znak).
And if a consonant must be soft, there was used the letter -Ь (myagkij znak).
For example:
Морозъ (moroz) - the frost - hard ending sound.
Дождь ( dozshd') - the rain - soft ending sound.
But after the revolution grammar rules were changed: there is no need to write the hard sign after the hard consonants anymore. It means that all consonants are hard without sign, but if it needs the soft sound then the soft sign (ь) to write necessary.
But the letter Ъ is alive now. It is used when it is necessary to separate consonant and vowel sounds (я, ё, е). The letters я, ё, or е make soft any consonant before them, and if the consonant must be hard and after it there is one of these 3 letters, we write the hard sign between the consonant and the vowel.
For example:
подъезд –(pod-yezd) - the entrance, and if there is no this letter "ъ", it is speaking as "подезд" (pod'yezd), so "d" will be soft.
For comparing the sound with the soft sign and without it.
The word "impossible", last consonant L, if you read this word in English, is a hard sound, but if you read this word in French, this consonant will be soft, like there is a soft sign after L.
