Cases - it's almost the hardest topic in russian grammar. I explain some the most useful of them.
1 case answers the questions Кто?(who?) Что? (what?) - студент (student), учитель (teacher), школа (school).
2 case denotes possession, absence and proximity and answers the questions Кого? (of whom?) Чего?(of what?) Чей?Чья?(whose?) - студента (student's ), учителя (teacher's), у школы (near the school).
3 case denotes the direction and the person or object to whom or which the action is adressed. This case answers the questions Кому? (to whom?) Чему? (for what?) - студенту(to the student), учителю(to the teacher),в школу(to the school), в школе (at the school),
4 case of a noun denotes the object to which the action passes over and answers the questions Кого?(whom?), Что? (what?) - слушать студента (listen to the student), смотреть на учителя (look at the teacher), видеть школу (to see the school).
5 caseis used to refer to an instument that helps to make something or denotes the relativity. This case answer the questions Кем? (with whom?) Чем? (with what?) - со студентом (with the student), с учителем (with the teacher), со школой (with the school)
6 case of noun (which is used with prepositions only) denotes the location or describes something. This one answers the questions О ком? (about who?) О чем? (about what?) Где? (where?) - остуденте(about student),обучителе(about teacher), нашколе (on the school).
So, that's the most important cases. I hope it will help you to learn russian and if you have any questions about this - ask me here.

yeah, all I see are these six cases online as well, but I like this definition a lot because it includes which questions each case answers. For some reason it seems like there are lots of irregular nouns that don't follow a pattern, either that or I'm doing something wrong...

Prasidh (19)
what is the difference between чему and почему?
Anna Alice (29)
What is the difference between to what and why? :)
Jakeджейк (22)
Thank you so much, this is going to really help =D
Lino4ka_18 (20)
You're welcome. I really hope so. It's impossible to explain cases for every word, but in the most situation it works :)
Jakeджейк (22)
Ok, so I can't figure out this gets the "x" on the ending:
Я живу в Соединённых Штатах Америки.
Does it have to do with something other than cases?
Lino4ka_18 (20)
About "x" on the ending:
Соединенные (and also Штаты)- plural, so it's plural form for 6th case - Соединенных (Штатах)
Leoparde (22)
А вообще в русском языке 9 падежей. Но в школе изучается шесть
