Indeed, there are many ways to misrepresent the truth. People lie for several basic reasons. Most people avoid the truth because they anticipate pleasure or they want to avoid pain. When it comes to lying, the anticipation of pleasure usually involves a selfish agenda. Thousands of us lie for purposes of self-interest and self-promotion. Some people lie because they feel if they tell the truth, they won’t get what they want. The avoidance of pain or discomfort often causes people to lie. People often lie because they fear punishment. Many people lie to avoid awkward situations or interpersonal conflict.
There are different types of lies:
bold-faced lie(telling a lie that everyone can see, e.g., the crumbs are on your face)
bluffing(such as in a card game)
exaggerating
white lie(to avoid hurting a friend e.g., nice haircut)
temporary lie(surprise party)
lying to avoid punishment
omission(leaving out information with the purpose of misleading)
perjury(lying in court or sworn statement)
sarcasmor tall tale (using untruth to express truth)
