Buongiorno is actually "good day" in English but it is used as "good morning". Morning is "mattina" in Italian, but no one would say "buona mattina".
"Buona sera" literally means "good evening" but we also use it as "good afternoon", basically we start saying "good evening" at 3:00 PM about :-)
And "buona notte" is good night.
If you're with friends or relatives you can say just "sera" and "notte" in place of "buona sera" and "buona notte", I've always found this thing so cool :-).
