About synonyms and antonyms

A synonym is a word that means the same thing as another word, while an antonym is a word that means the opposite.

They both take their root words from the Greek language – syn meaning same or together, anti meaning opposite or against, and onym (or nonem) meaning name. While synonymum and synōnymon are Late Latin and Greek words, respectively, with long histories, the word “antonym” was introduced to English around 1867 from French and German, and was coined as an opposite to synonym – it doesn’t align directly with the Greek language. Even their histories are opposites!

Synonyms and antonyms are incredibly useful for students, writers and anyone who wants to speak professionally. Being able to access more words can add variety to your writing, speech or content. It can help you make better points, find exactly the right word, and keep listeners or readers engaged. Knowing tons of synonyms and antonyms can also help give your English grades a boost and make reading easier!

Let’s take a closer look.

All about synonyms

First up, a primer on synonyms.

Synonym definition

A synonym is a word that shares a meaning with another word. They can mean the same thing or similar things. For example, cool and chilly are synonyms, because they can each mean the same thing, but they don’t always mean exactly the same thing in every circumstance.

The table below has a few examples to get you started.

Synonyms can also be situational. For example, handsome and pretty are synonyms – they both mean good-looking or attractive, but handsome is generally used when talking about more masculine subjects or features, while pretty tends to be applied more to female subjects and feminine features.

Similarly, there are synonyms between different English dialects. English speakers come from far and wide, and while they share a lot of vocabulary, people from different places use some different words and spellings. Jumper and sweater mean the same thing, but they’re synonyms from

Finding and using synonyms

While we use a dictionary to look up word meanings, we use a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms. Of course, you can find a paper thesaurus if you want, but there are plenty of great online resources to help you find the right word for the job. A simple Google search will now give you synonyms from a variety of reliable sources.

You may want to look up synonyms if you find yourself repeating the same word a lot, or if you can’t think of the exact right way to say something. Maybe you say that someone is good, but you know good isn’t capturing exactly what you want to convey – maybe you mean kind, polite, well-behaved, skilled, talented.

This is where looking for synonyms can come in handy. And to help you on your way, you can scroll down to the list of synonyms and antonyms for common words later in this article. If you’re learning English, you may want to take time to memorize all these different synonyms and antonyms and their meanings to help expand your vocabulary and make yourself understood.

All about antonyms

Next, let’s take a look at antonyms.

Antonym definition

An antonym is a word that means the opposite of another word. For example, good and bad are antonyms.

Here are a few examples of antonyms of common words to help you remember.

Finding and using antonyms

Antonyms can be a little trickier to find than synonyms, but most online thesaurus tools will have at least a few antonyms listed, where applicable. Often, the best thing to do if you want many options for antonyms is to find one antonym and then look up synonyms of that word.

For example, let’s say you start with the word include. An antonym of include is exclude. To find more antonyms of include, you might look up synonyms of exclude.

Of course, not every word has a synonym or antonym. There’s no opposite of something specific like parrots or ophthalmology. But to start learning some common similar and opposite words, scroll down to find a list of synonyms and antonyms for common words.
