SIMPLE PAST: You need the verb in simple past. Example:
The car crashed the wall of his house.
He opened the door.
PAST CONTINUOUS: You need verb to be in past (was/were) and the action verb in gerund (-ing). Example:
He was playing in front of his house.
We were watching TV last night.
TO CONNECT SIMPLE PAST AND PAST CONTINUOUS IN ONE PHRASE. Generally the past continuous comes first and then you put the simple past idea. You can use the following conjunctions: when, and, so, but, because, etc. Example:
He was playing in front of his house when the car crashed the wall of his house.
We were watching TV last night and he opened the door.
