Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
- Identify opportunities and risks for delivering busuu.com’s services as a web-based business, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the business success
- Identify technology trends and evolving social behavior that may support or impede the success of the business
- Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services
- Direct development and execution of an enterprise-wide information security plan that protects the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of busuu.com’s data and servers
- Establish and supervise the software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress
- Review current best practices for the web framework
- Review and approve proposed development releases and manage the release process
- Monitor application performance and review any application failures in testing or production
- Support the marketing process by providing details of technical requirements for internet marketing and SEO (search engine optimization)
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and software development best practices by attending relevant conferences and reading widely
- Define and communicate company values and standards for acquiring or developing systems, equipment, or software within the company
- Ensure that technology standards and best practices are maintained across the organization
- Share knowledge, mentor, and educate the organization’s investors, management, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders with regard to the company’s technological vision, opportunities, and challenges
- Develop, track, and control the development and deployment annual operating and capital budgets for purchasing, staffing, and operations
- Supervise recruitment, training, retention, and organization of all development staff
- Establish standards of performance and monitor conformance for staff (through performance review) and vendors (through service level agreements)
- Ensure the company’s internal technological processes and customer-facing services comply with community expectations and applicable laws and regulations for privacy, security, and social responsibility
Requirements
- University degree in the field of computer science, business administration, or another rigorous discipline. An advanced degree in one of these fields is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet consumer needs or solve business problems
- Proven track-record of 8+ years experience managing web application development
- Ability to discern user requirements and develop specifications
- Solid knowledge of core technologies for high traffic large-scale websites (Apache, MySQL, PHP, memcache, reverse proxies, DNS etc.)
- Experience with Unix/Linux system administration and web server configuration
- Familiarity with technical requirements of internet marketing and SEO
- Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management
- Familiarity with consumer privacy and payments industry compliance requirements
- Exposure to business theory, business process development, governance processes, management, budgeting, and administrative operations
- Experience working in startup company is a plus

Senior Systems Administrator
Responsibilities
- Design, configure and manage highly available live environment
- Keep the busuu.com site up and running 24/7
- System scalability design and optimization of webservers, proxies, databases and other components
- Backup and maintenance of production system
- Setup of advanced monitoring system
- Collaboration with hosting providers
- Plan future capacity needs and procurement of new hardware
- Close work with development team
- Design, configure and manage network and appliances of team
Requirements
- Excitement, energy and dedication for building great new products
- 8+ years experience in designing Unix/Linux system architecture
- 8+ years of Unix/Linux system administration, configuration and automation (CentOS/RHEL is a plus) including recent experience administering a high volume site
- Experience running and monitoring highly available web sites based on the LAMP stack involving memcached and reverse proxies including capacity analysis, service configuration, monitoring, etc.
- Ability to analyze network behavior, system performance and application issues using state of the art tools
- Strong skills in PHP (Drupal/Pressflow is a plus) and Javascript (AJAX)
- Strong skills in at least one command line scripting/coding language (bash is a plus)
- Experience setting up, configuring and optimizing Apache
- Experience managing and tuning of MySQL servers with replication
- Experience setting up, configuring and optimizing reverse proxy caches is a plus
- Experience with NFS configuration and other file systems
- Ability to handle periodic on-call duty
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and working under pressure to firefight service outages
- Full motivation to work in a challenging and fun startup environment
- Excellent communication skills in English and one additional language is a plus
- BA/BS in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience
- Speaking Spanish is a plus
